  16. University; on his 65th birthday, in March 1992. In his nine
  17. years at N.Y.U., the gregarious and energetic politician turned
  18. academic (he served 11 terms as a Democratic Congressman from
  19. Indiana) has almost doubled the university's endowment, to $540
  20. million, and made the school one of the nation's leading
  21. research institutions.
